Claude's most expensive consumer plan costs $200 a month and has "20x" in the name. Next to it sits Max 5x for $100. So the offer appears almost impossible to resist: pay twice as much and get four times the usage.
If you already keep hitting the 5x limit, the calculation feels obvious. Four times more Claude? Of course you upgrade.
Except that is not what you are buying.
The only limit Anthropic explicitly multiplies by 20 is the five-hour session limit. Max 5x provides five times more usage per five-hour session than Pro, while Max 20x provides 20 times more. But both plans then have an unknown "separate weekly cap".
So what's the difference for the weekly limit? User reports suggest it is actually only around twice the total weekly allowance of Max 5x.
So the upgrade that appears to offer four times more Claude for twice the price will, for heavy users, amount to roughly twice as much Claude for twice the price.
And that is what makes the marketing feel misleading.
The Reaction
On August 30, a post by SataEric pointing out the difference spread across X.
The reaction was immediate. People said they had been paying for 20x for months without knowing this. Others called the label misleading, questioned whether the upgrade was worth it or said they were downgrading.
My reaction was similar. I had just assumed Max 20x meant four times the weekly usage of Max 5x. But if the multiplier does not apply to the weekly limit, it cannot translate into four times the monthly usage either if you regularly exhaust that limit.
If you actually read Anthropic's documentation, it is rather vague. Its Max page says the 5x and 20x multipliers apply to session limits, which reset every five hours. It also confirms that both plans have a separate weekly limit. But what it never publishes is the weekly allowance for either tier or how Max 20x compares with Max 5x.
So what you assume, naturally, is that the weekly limit is also 20x Pro, or four times Max 5x. If it is something else, why wouldn't they say what it is?
What About Codex?
Claude is not the only AI service selling a "20x" plan. OpenAI uses the same 20x label for Codex usage on ChatGPT Pro, but there, 20x actually means what users naturally assume: it applies to weekly limits.
Tibo Sottiaux, who leads Codex at OpenAI, directly addressed the comparison on X. He said Codex's 20x multiplier applies specifically to weekly usage limits and that Pro provides "quite precisely 20X" the usage of Plus.
In other words, Codex 20x really does mean 20x when it comes to the weekly limit.
That makes Claude's interpretation even worse, when even a competitor disagrees with it.
Did you also assume Claude's 20x applied to the weekly limit?
